Description

P 1138 – Development of an external loaded test method for determining the cracking susceptibility of resistance spot welded high strength steel sheet

The constantly rising demands for lower fuel consumption and emissions as well as for higher passenger safety are current challenges for the automotive industry. One approach to meet these requirements is the application of advanced high strength steel sheets in car body production. But the complex microstructure and the advanced properties of these materials cause a tendency to form cracks during resistance spot welding.
The risk of not meeting customer requirements on joints threatens the industry, especially small and medium-sized companies, e.g. during the introduction of new steel grades. This project aims to eliminate this risk without excessive experiments and costs. The experimental approach developed within the previous project (P921) will be supplemented with finite element simulation. Hereby, temperature, stress and strain fields during the welding process are ‘measured’, evaluated and transferred to real components. Also, the process chain (e.g. internal restraints) are taken into account for typical component samples. The results make an evaluation of the processing safety of various material-component combinations possible. User-specific components/materials may be investigated following the previously determined and documented procedure.
